What is Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus. If left undetected, hepatitis C can lead to serious medical complications. Even while a person feels healthy, the virus may be causing permanent liver damage leading to scarring (cirrhosis), liver cancer, liver failure or death. Exposure to the hepatitis C virus occurs when a person comes into direct contact with the infected blood of another person.

Who Should Test?

Over 4 million people in the United States are infected. Most are unaware they have the hepatitis C virus. Experts agree it is important to be tested if you may have been exposed to the hepatitis C virus through blood transfusion prior to July 1992, a contaminated needle, or other possible exposure to infected blood or other bodily fluids. Some experts suggest testing if you have had multiple sex partners in your lifetime, or have had any sexually transmitted disease. If you are uncertain about your possible exposure, or are not sure how you might benefit from testing, we recommend you call our healthcare counselors at 1-800-867-5655, visit our website at homeaccess.com, or contact your physician for more information.

New Hiv Discreet Testing may come available

The FDA is looking to approve a new home HIV test produced by OraSure Technologies, the test is called OraQuick Advance Rapid HIV-1/2 Antibody Test and has been available for use through hospitals and clinics since October 2004. To conduct the test, which has a more than 99 percent accuracy rate, you simply swab your gums and then place the swab into a vial filled with a solution. After 20 minutes, a strip in the vial produces the result: one line means you have no HIV antibodies; two lines mean you have antibodies and are therefore HIV-positive. Providing OraQuick at a relatively affordable price would negate arguments that anyone not getting tested is holding back through lack of accessibility or privacy. Then AIDS groups could narrow their research into why so many people aren't getting tested.  OraQuick currently sells to hospitals for about $15.

To find an HIV testing center in your area, go to http://www.hivtest.org, or request a test from your doctor. (Note, HIV tests are not a part of a routine blood exam. You need to ask for one.) For testing centers that cater specifically to young people, check out http://www.adolescentaids.org/youth/resource_nationwide.html.
