Spring Awakening Musical
The hit musical first took Broadway by storm, and now Spring Awakening is making its way through theaters across America. Spring Awakening has an all new sound, a fresh and young cast and a new, hip style. While Broadway has, in recent years, offered up stagy pop sound and retro pop sound, Spring Awakening is modern indie rock, complete with the rock band on stage.
Spring Awakening is a coming of age story, preserving the dialogue and formality of Frank Wedekind's 1891 play. During his lifetime, Wedekind's plays were considered pornography and were only performed heavily censored; however, today his tragic and comic story of teenage sexuality is well suited to a modern sensibility. The message behind Wedekind's play holds true today. A lack of information, support and education about sexuality remains as much a problem today as it was so many years ago, with equally tragic consequences in the modern world.
Songwriter Duncan Sheik and playwright Steven Sater have set the play of a 19th century German expressionist to modern music, ranging from anthems like “Totally Fucked” to sad graveside ballads. This old play had all the critical components of modern music, including sex, tragic death and violence.
Fresh young actors bring talent and energy to the stage, while innovative stage design and lighting create the feel of a rock concert in a classic theater. Will Spring Awakening be a new beginning for musical theater, opening up new musical opportunities? Spring Awakening has won eight Tony awards, including best musical. With a US tour and European openings, Spring Awakening continues to hold its own on Broadway.
While the hit show has been touring for some months, tour dates remain on the West Coast, followed by a return eastward, including late winter and spring shows in Dallas, Atlanta, Boston, and Charlotte.
